Whiskey, kayaking, and the music of David Bowie are all things that I enjoy. But it would be fair to say that I’m not an aficionado when it comes to any of them. I add mixers to the whiskey, don’t even own a Bowie album, and kayak just once or twice a year. So how does […]

Rebel Rebel Float Trip: Pairing History and Quirk to Get People Paddling
When the Mon River Town Program approached Cycle Forward about organizing a paddling trip, they suggested coming up with a theme and offering a “Mon River experience.” They suggested incorporating the historic Whiskey Rebellion. Before long, the Rebel Rebel Float Trip was conceived and would bring together kayaking, David Bowie, and stories of rebellion.
Fireflies add Magic to the Allegheny National Forest
Last weekend, I sat in the Allegheny National Forest in a spot so dark that I couldn’t see my own hand. My birthday is coming up, and this was an early present. Of course, you’re wondering, “You call that a gift?” But, yes, really. It was one of the best gifts. We were there to […]
Town Mouse, Country Mouse?
Recounting 16 Years of Life Yesterday, I had dinner at a restaurant I first tried nearly 16 years ago when I was just getting started in my community development work. I was 24-years-old and new to Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood the first time I walked through the door at Dish. Yesterday, while sitting on one […]

I’m going to share something with you. I cried about money today. I’m not a frequent all-out crier, although I do get teary-eyed from time to time. But this was a full-fledged cry of frustration and embarrassment. It brought to mind a similar incident last year at a Phoenix International ticket counter. I had missed […]

Collaborations catapult me forward
And make my work a whole lot more fun! Photos by Tori Stipcak of Victoria Irene Photography Most independently-employed consultants are acutely aware of the old saying “two heads are better than one” and a longing for the creative energy that comes along with sharing ideas with coworkers. Even in writing this post, I wish […]
