Every so often, I get a call from someone in Atlantic Canada who is looking for quick turnaround on a project. This time, it was from fellow consultant Harvey Sawler (iImagine), and when the request is a fall visit to Prince Edward Island, you say yes.
Harv was working with a group in Stanley Bridge in the Cavendish area (land of Anne of Green Gables) to strengthen the community’s sense of place. You’re probably thinking being able to lay claim to Anne of Green Gables would be enough. But Stanley Bridge in particular has a working harbour that can use some TLC and more foot traffic. The group was going through a 6-month process with Harv, and my role was to come in for just a few hours and inspire them with business and product development opportunities in coastal and national park gateway communities. We discussed sense of place, pride of place, and ways to leverage outdoor recreation and cultural heritage opportunities. I particularly loved how everyone’s love for their community came through when we did an exercise recalling the sights, sounds, and smells of the harbour. Working with this group on a brisk October morning in cozy community center was a 2019 highlight for me!
